Snow way, sunny days to turn cold

- By Colm McGuirk

THE beautiful blue sky spring weather we’ve enjoyed over the past week is about to take a decidedly chilly turn.

Met Éireann said temperatures could reach up to 17C in parts of the country today, predicting ‘another dry day with long spells of spring sunshine’.

But the public is being advised to enjoy the good weather while it lasts, as a significant change is on the cards later this week.

The national forecaster warned: ‘A change is expected on Wednesday as cooler air blankets the country with scattered showers, some possibly wintry, feeding down throughout the afternoon and evening. Cloudy skies and noticeably colder too with highs of 6C to 9C in a brisk northerly wind.’ And the chill factor will continue into Thursday, with Met Éireann warning ‘a brisk northerly breeze’ will bring down scattered showers – some wintry – in hilly areas.

The forecaster also warned that temperatures will dip close to zero overnight in the coming days.

Some long-range weather models – which are subject to change – have given even more dire forecasts, including snow for some parts of the country.

Alan O’Reilly, of Carlow Weather, shared charts on his social media platforms, comparing the outlook to ‘a bad April fools’ joke’.

Mr O’Reilly said: ‘The latest ECMWF weather model update looks like a bad April fools’ joke with a real blast of cold to start April and even a risk of some wintry falls.’
