Blind teacher will see again

- From Scarlet Howes IN KATOWICE, POLAND

THE Ukrainian teacher who was blinded in a Russian missile attack has had her sight partly restored after a three-hour operation.

Olena Kurylo was told she might never be able to see again after the assault on her home in Kharkiv. But surgeons in Poland have managed to restore almost a third of her vision.

‘I felt a joy that I haven’t felt since the war started,’ Ms Kurylo, 52, said. ‘All I could think at that moment was that I would be able to live a normal life and be useful.’

Photographs showing Olena with her face bloodied were beamed around the world last month. A missile exploded outside her home, sending shards of glass into her face.

‘Throughout the surgery, I kept thinking I have become a symbol of hope for many people, so I have no right to be weak and that gave me strength.’
