League of their own
RTÉ Radio deserves praise for its coverage of the National Football League last weekend.
With reporters at all the relevant venues up and down the country, listeners were treated to very enjoyable bulletins as to how the various matches were going.
While there have been ‘only the league’ remarks, the spring competitions provide better and more balanced encounters than in the championship, where there are so many mismatches.
While attempts are being made to improve the balance of summer contests, finishing the All-Ireland in July hardly makes sense to many followers. This is surely handing over media coverage to rival sports like soccer and rugby in August and September.
While enjoying the radio coverage last Sunday, I will sign off with a gripe. On the Sunday night television highlights programme, two commentators used the ‘at the death’ phrase which is hardly appropriate and can be hurtful to some.
