ONE IN 65 PEOPLE ON AUTISM SPECTRUM

-

ONE in 65 people in Ireland is on the autism spectrum, but no two people are the same or have the same experience of the condition.

AsIAm is the national autism charity, and its new campaign, The Same Chance, aims to improve the lives of people with autism, especially in education, employment and social integration.

A report commissioned by the charity for The Same Chance campaign found that:

More than half of all children with autism are bullied at school.

85% of people with autism are unemployed.

Autistic people are four times more likely to experience loneliness and NINE times more likely to die by suicide.

Only 60% of people believe autistic children should attend the same schools as neurotypical children. AsIAm chief executive Adam Harris said of the report’s findings, ‘Too often autistic people face barriers which others in society do not. AsIAm is working to remove these barriers, through our wide range of support, information and advocacy programmes, but we need your support to continue to grow this work’.
