ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL
SLICK NEW POLITICAL DRAMA This is the most addictive British drama Netflix has made yet — think of it as a UK version of The Undoing, digging into the messy lives of the elite. The scandal under scrutiny is an accusation of rape that rocks the marriage of a slick politician to his classy wife, and constantly makes you ask questions of them both. Is James guilty? Is that glimmer of vulnerability in his eyes real? Is Sophie right to trust him, and is she as righteous as she appears? Sienna Miller plays Sophie, and has great previous form as the wronged wife — see her brilliant performance in The Loudest Voice on Sky/Now — while Rupert Friend (James, right with Sophie) is an expert in on-screen moral ambiguity, as seen from his long stint as Peter Quinn on Homeland. Flashbacks to James’s past as a member of the hedonistic ‘Libertines’ at Oxford — essentially the Bullingdon Club — add another dimension, and Michelle Dockery’s expert portrayal of the prosecuting barrister is the icing on this already addictive cake.
