Vardy could learn from Depp trial’s showmance
WHATEVER the verdict in the Wagatha Christie trial, Rebekah Vardy has been the loser in the court of public opinion. Granted she didn’t do herself any favours by her vindictive and sneaky behaviour but she missed a trick, not hiring the male equivalent of Johnny Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez for her defence team. Vasquez’s remorseless questioning of Amber Heard shattered the actress’s credibility but her open affection for Depp was just as powerful a weapon. By hugging her client repeatedly and reassuringly holding his hand during the trial, she cast the actor as a vulnerable soul who despite the ugly revelations of the court case, his vile and misogynistic texts and his wild addictions is still attractive to the ladies.
Vasquez, 37, now set to enjoy the same crazy level of US celebrity as Marcia Clarke after the OJ Simpson circus, also whipped up speculation about a romance with Depp by refusing to deny questions about it.
It seems hard to believe that a good-looking, razorsharp lawyer in the prime of life and with her career about to go supernova, would give her heart to a drug-addled actor touching 60 but there’s no telling when Cupid strikes.
For the moment though their showmance serves a cunning purpose in persuading the jury about Depp’s gentlemanly poise and loveable nature.
It’s a tactic Vardy and indeed more celebrities might employ should they have to face a courtroom battle. For who knows how the Wagatha Christie trial might have progressed if day in day out, a handsome male QC had flirted outrageously with Vardy and shown all the signs of slowly falling in love with her?
