THE YOUNG POPE
DEVILISHLY GOOD DRAMA
Jude Law never seemed like an actor with oceans of depth swirling away behind his pretty boy looks. Or at least he didn’t until this 2016 series. He’s an unpredictable, vindictive revelation as Lenny Belardo, the American priest unexpectedly elevated to the papacy. As Pius XIII, he sets out to remake the Catholic Church in his own more than slightly diabolical image, regardless of what it costs. Dripping with stunning visuals and a top-drawer supporting cast — James Cromwell and Diane Keaton particularly stand out — this is a twisty, conniving treat of a show. Sky also has the almost equally good follow-up show,
The New Pope.
