Great gardens that will keep the kids happy too

If you’re struggling to keep the family entertaine­d as the school holidays draw to a close, try these gardens for a great day out.

The Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens, Tully, Co. Kildare

The Japanese Gardens at the National Stud were created between 1906 and 1910, and were designed by craftsman Tassa Eida and his son Minoru. They combine art, philosophy and nature in perfect balance to create a tranquil and contemplat­ive environmen­t that make it a delightful place to visit. St Fiachra’s Garden, named after the patron saint of gardening, is a new addition.There’s also a fairy trail that the kids will love, as well as a play area.

Belvedere House and Gardens near Mullingar, Co Westmeath

The Walled Garden retains many of the features of a 19th Century pleasure garden with lawns, walks and beautiful borders. At the bottom of the Walled Garden there is a a magical Fairy Garden in an enchanted glen. And with four children’s play areas that include a 30m zipline and lakeside swings, there is always something exciting to do.

Fota House & Gardens, Cork

The stunning Fota gardens and world-renowned arboretum specialise in activities for children, including Digging for History, Junior Plant Hunters Activity Trail, Little Explorers Trail and The Plant Hunters Tree Trail, while Queen Maeve’s Honey Bee Adventure is sure to create a buzz!

Johnstown Castle, Wexford

The castle has a new visitor centre and a restored undergroun­d servants’ tunnel stretching 85 metres. Children can spot the gargoyles on the 19th century castle as they wander through the spectacula­r ornamental grounds and gardens with over 200 varieties of trees and shrubs. You can picnic by the castle lakeside with its Gothic towers, waterfalls and statues and watch the swans and their cygnets. Peacocks roam freely and display their finery in the courtyard of the Agricultur­al Museum where you can also enjoy an ice cream.

Brigit’s Garden, Co Galway

Brigit’s Garden takes children on a journey into the heart of Celtic heritage and mythology, making it one of the truly outstandin­g places to visit in the West. The awardwinni­ng Celtic Gardens are widely regarded as one of the most spectacula­r in Ireland. There’s also a children’s discovery trail, a natural playground, an ancient ring fort, thatched roundhouse and crannóg, and the calendar sundial, the largest in Ireland. Pop into the café to relax afterwards.
