Shels edge past Peamount in five-goal thriller

ON a thrilling day of Evoke.ie FAI Women’s Cup quarter-final action, there were big wins for Bohemians and Shelbourne, with Wexford and Athlone joining the capital sides in the last four.

The clash between league champions Shelbourne and Peamount United delivered a five-goal thriller, as the home side sealed a stunning comeback to win 3-2 courtesy of some magic from Jemma Quinn.

Alannah McEvoy put Peamount in front after nine minutes and added a truly sensationa­l second three minutes later, with an excellent long-range chip. A Jemma Quinn header pulled one back for Shels, sparking a frantic first-half comeback.

Shelbourne pulled level in the 36th minute, when Heather O’Reilly’s brilliant cross was headed home by Jess Gargan .

Quinn got her second to put Shelbourne 3-2 up at half-time.

The second half ended scoreless and Shels went through.

Bohemians also made it into the last four, beating Sligo Rovers 3-1 at Dalymount Park .

Abbie Brophy put Bohs in front 15 minutes into the first half.

Erica Burke scored a penalty to make it 2-0 and an own goal from Sligo’s Sarah Kiernan made it 3-0. Sligo’s Lauren Boles volleyed home five minutes after the break but that was all they could muster and Bohs went through.

Wexford Youths saw off DLR Waves 3-1 while Athlone proved too strong for Cork at home, running out 2-0 winners.

Katie Malone headed Waves in front after 15 minutes with Nicola Sinnott heading in to tie it up before half time.

But in the second half Waves’s Mia Dodd and Eve Badana were sent off and Wexford’s Ellen Molloy scored on 85 minutes and in the last minute, Ciara Rossiter added Wexford’s third.

Athlone and Cork were 0-0 deep into the second half, until Muireann Devaney put Athlone 1-0 up, with Gillian Keenan sealing the win on 78 minutes.
