Bad sisters... Great cast

…and truly AMAZING contacts, with links to the biggest names in showbiz

- by Colm McGuirk

WRITER and actor Sharon Horgan said she is feeling ‘more and more connected’ to Ireland as gets older and, with much of her work set in Britain and the US, this might explain why she came home for her new critically acclaimed series, Bad Sisters.

Horgan co-wrote, produced and stars in the Apple TV series, an adaptation of a Belgian series from 2012. Set in Ireland, the story revolves around the five Garvey sisters, who plot to kill the abusive husband of the second-born and its cast is stacked with some of the country’s finest homegrown acting talent, including Sarah Greene, Eve Hewson, Eva Birthistle and Brian Gleeson.

And while some are more established than others, they can all be linked to some of the biggest names in the business.

SHARON HORGAN:

As well as writing numerous quasibiographical comedies in recent years, Horgan herself, who plays the eldest of the ‘bad’ Garvey sisters, starred in the Netflix cloning comedy-drama Living With Yourself, with Paul Rudd playing two versions of himself. She also starred alongside James McAvoy, right, in the pandemic-set comedydrama Together.

ANNE-MARIE DUFF:

On-screen sibling AnneMarie Duff, born in London to Irish parents, was married to McAvoy for 10 years but has shared the screen with even bigger names. She worked with Tom Hardy, above, in BBC miniseries The Virgin Queen; Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett in Notes On A Scandal; and Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth in Before I Go To Sleep.

EVA BIRTHISTLE:

Bray and Derry-raised Eva Birthistle played Georgina in 2015’s Brooklyn, her character mentoring Saoirse Ronan’s, left, in the early stages of her move to the US. In the ’90s, Birthistle appeared in more lowkey films with Mia Farrow and a pre-fame Colin Farrell, left.

SARAH GREENE:

Cork actress Sarah Greene was Paul Mescal’s, right, mother in Normal People, and played a sex worker in comedy The Guard, which starred Don Cheadle and Brendan

Gleeson. She was in famine thriller Black ‘47 with Barry Keoghan and Stephen Rea, and had a small role in the critically panned Burnt, whose cast includes Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and Uma Thurman. Her character’s wife in Bad Sisters is played by Drogheda-raised Yasmine

Akram, left, perhaps best known for playing Janine Hawkins in Sherlock, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.

EVE HEWSON:

Hewson, the baby of the family in Bad Sisters, is no stranger to the company of megastars, being the second daughter of Bono. She also starred opposite Clive Owen, far left, in Stephen Soderberg’s The Knick, as well as having roles alongside Ethan Hawke (Tesla) and Tom Hanks, inset, (Bridge Of Spies).
