THE CAPTURE

- TV Editor Mike Mulvihill’s pick of the most exciting shows across all platforms this week

It takes a special type of drama to ‘capture’ viewers’ attention, especially in our fractured modern age — and The Capture did just that with its gripping, twist-filled tale of faked CCTV footage back in 2019. We’ve waited almost three years for series two but it’s been worth it, based on the evidence of these first two episodes, which deliver a thrilling opening gambit that takes the idea of faked footage and ups the ante, both in terms of technology and scale. Our hero is still the terminally sleep-deprived DCI Carey (Holliday Grainger) who

has, in theory, been promoted to become part of the footage faking team, but faces opposition from the inside. The wider story casts China and its creepy AI technology as her second foe, and tangled up with that is a smug government minister (Paapa Essiedu, above with Grainger) who clearly has a lot to learn. The fun of the show is in trying to figure out who the real enemy is and, while it may look like a dark and gritty show on the surface, fun is clearly high on the mind of the people who made it, too — the conspiracy this time takes us inside the halls of the BBC itself, and even onto the set of Newsnight. Sunday and Monday, 9pm, BBC1
