CYCLING: Lara Gillespie stormed to victory in Piltown, Co Kilkenny, yesterday to claim her second stage win of this year’s Rás na mBan. Gillespie again showed her sprinting prowess to hold off challenges from Ellen McDermott and s Maddie Leech, in second and third place respectively.

Overall race leader Lieke van Zeelst, guest riding for Greenmount Cycling Academy, finished safely in the lead group to consolidate her five-second lead.

GAELIC GAMES: John Hegarty is the new Wexford football boss. His appointment was confirmed yesterday, filling one of the last remaining vacancies in the inter-county game. Hegarty had a distinguished playing career, mostly at full forward, making 105 appearances for the county, in which he scored 21-125.

He also won six county titles with his native Kilanerin, as well as a Railway Cup with Leinster and a Sigerson Cup with UCD.

Wexford GAA announced Hegarty’s apppointment, detailing that his backroom team will be announced at the next county committee meeting.

CRICKET: Ollie Robinson and Ollie Pope lifted England into a useful position in the third Test after a wicket-laden third day at the Kia Oval.

Robinson exploited just enough movement to scoop a Test-best five for 49 which left South Africa all out for a meagre 118 in just 36.2 overs. Wickets also tumbled in England’s response as they pushed the accelerator, although Pope’s sparky 67 from 77 balls ushered the hosts to 154 for seven before bad light ended the day early.
