Fowl play in the Liffey as over 500 compete in annual swim

- By Dolly Busby

OVER 500 competitors from across the country took the icy plunge in the Liffey Swim yesterday in the annual race’s 102nd year.

As well as the usual obstacles, one brave woman had to cope with a swan crossing her path.

In total, 194 women and 298 men crossed the finish line. The women’s race was won by Melissa Corbally from NAC Masters Swimming Club in the capital. The men’s race was won by Ken Dent from Dublin Swimming Club.

Starting near Guinness Brewery, the swimmers raced downstream under 11 bridges and finished near Custom House Quay.

Dublin Fire Brigade’s decontamination unit gave al-fresco showers to the racers afterwards.
