Man U’s pricey own goal in transfer fees
Manchester United fans won’t need ‘tellin’ – but the club has been paying a tad too much for overpriced players.
In fact, it has done more to inflate transfer fees than any other top club in Europe, a new study shows.
Since 2012, United have overspent by €238m, according to CIES Football Observatory.
Over those 10 years, the club splashed out €1.6bn on 33 players that were really worth only a collective €1.36bn. Next on the bad-transfer-value table came Juventus and Paris St-Germain who overpaid by €233m and €162m respectively.
United splurged €97m on Harry Maguire and €57m on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, for example, values that raised eyebrows even among United fans, though many accept that high-profile clubs are often ‘held to ransom’ for premium prices when they go shopping for players.
Both players have been dropped from the ‘starting’ first team this season.
