HR consultant Damien McCarthy’s advice for companies throwing a Christmas party:

1. Be careful about plying staff with free alcohol – there may be ways to instigate fun that don’t involve a free bar
2. Don’t have work-related conversations with staff – even if it’s a positive appraisal
3. Don’t simply ‘throw caution to the wind’ after a day’s work – have an event planned beforehand to help keep a lid on things
