Jennings is new 50km European champ
ATHLETICS: Ireland has a new European Champion in ultra-running, with Caitriona Jennings coming first in the 50km race at the European Championships in Spain.
The Donegal woman, 42, broke away from the pack after the halfway point to cross the line in a time of 3:19:42. Jennings was with the leaders from the gun, running with team-mate Sorcha Loughnane (Donore Harriers) until just after halfway before gradually upping her pace over the final 15km in Avila. Loughnane would ultimately finish sixth, but the race was dominated by Jennings, who powered all the way to the finish with an average pace of four minutes per kilometre.
