CONVERSATIONS WITH A KILLER: THE JEFFREY DAHMER TAPES

THE MIND OF A MURDERER

A string of previously unaired conversations between Jeffrey Dahmer and his lawyers provide the spine of this hard-hitting three-part documentary series about the notorious US serial killer (above). Operating in Milwaukee between 1978 and 1991, the outwardly charming Dahmer killed and dismembered 17 men and boys, storing body parts from many of them in his freezer. It’s a tough watch — the details of Dahmer’s crimes are far from pleasant — but it offers an unprecedented insight into the mind of a serial killer, as well as examining why it took so long for him to be caught.

DESCENDANT SURPRISING STORY OF SLAVERY

The African slave trade was outlawed in the US in 1807, but it was around 50 years after that before the last known ship with enslaved Africans landed there.

That ship was the Clotilda and this powerful and fascinating documentary tells not just its story but that of the town the slaves founded in Alabama, and of their descendants (including Emmett Lewis, above) who have lived and died there since. It comes from the production company set up by Barack and Michelle Obama. From Friday

Over the course of this one-off series they endure stumbling block after stumbling block — including family disapproval and a potentially tragic health crisis — as they build and sustain a life together. Beautifully shot and unashamedly emotional, it ticks all the right romantic boxes. From Friday

On the evening of 15
