This slick and attractive fantasy film follows two young girls, the beautiful Sophie and the gothicky Agatha, as they’re kidnapped by mysterious forces and swept off to a distant school for fairytale heroes and villains. Adapted from the first in a trilogy of books, this is aimed squarely at Harry Potter fans and pretty much hits the target, especially since it neatly copies the trick of pairing little-known lead actors

with a dazzling array of famous faces in support: The Matrix’s Laurence Fishburne, Oscar winner Charlize Theron and Scandal’s Kerry Washington (above, top right, with Theron top left) are just some of the star acting talent playing the school’s staff. From Wednesday
