Anger at Robbie’s plan to play Qatar
ROBBIE Williams is set to appear a concert during the World Cup in Qatar – sparking condemnation from fans due to the Gulf state’s appalling human rights record.
The singer and US rock group Maroon 5 are set to perform at Doha Golf Club on December 8, 10 days before the final. Williams, who is reportedly worth more than €200million, is understood to be being paid by organisers Qatar Live, which is thought to be connected to the Qatari government which restricts women’s rights and bans homosexuality. The former Take That singer, 48, is an LGBTQ supporter and has appeared on the cover of gay magazine Attitude several times.
Williams’ spokesperson has not commented on the show but the singer has been lambasted by fans who are furious he is supporting the Middle Eastern country.
One wrote: ‘Sorry but the Qatar World Cup is wrong on many levels and I am disappointed that Robbie feels it is acceptable to so blatantly support it.’ Another posted: ‘I love him but this is disappointing,’ while a third said: ‘Hope that’s not true’.
Another post simply read: ‘That’s sad, really sad.’
Qatar has faced mass scrutiny over the living and working conditions imposed on hundreds of thousands of migrant workers since the country was named as World Cup host.
Williams was previously accused of selling out by performing at the World Cup in Russia in 2018.
The Mail on Sunday revealed David Beckham signed a €10m deal to be the face of Qatar World Cup last year.
