Fianna Fáil are ‘engaging in Sinn Féin economics’ over ban
COALITION tensions have erupted between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil over the Government’s decision to impose an eviction ban. Although Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has publicly backed the proposal as providing a ‘breathing space’, privately Fine Gael are fuming over what sources have described as Fianna Fáil’s ‘new Sinn Féin economics’.
Mr Varadkar was initially uneasy about the idea, noting the ‘obvious disadvantage is that when it ends, you may see a glut of homelessness occurring at that time which is harder to deal with’.
And although the incoming Taoiseach has now rowed in to support the eviction ban, announced by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on Tuesday, members of his own party are highly critical.
One senior Fine Gael TD told the Irish Mail on Sunday: ‘How on earth can we run a “Sinn Féin will burst the economy” line when our Coalition partners are engaging in the very same economics?
‘Even the mad Greens weren’t asking for this. It is a Fianna Fáil initiative; worse still it’s new Sinn Féin-Fianna Fáil economics.’
