10 TIPS ON HAGGLING

-

Haggling is not always appropriate – know when to do it.

Do it when buying second hand, paying for anything in cash and for pricey services like energy, TV and broadband.

Haggling is a no-no in a shop or supermarket – but with a greengrocer or market trader, it might be worth a try.

Be nice – people are more inclined to knock something off the price if you’re polite and engaging. A bit of banter always helps – in fact this is the major appeal of haggling, you’re relating to people.

Don’t run down the product too much– the seller will feel insulted, defensive and wonder why you want to buy it. However, do reasonably and politely explain why you think it might be worth less.

Make sure you are dealing with someone authorised to haggle – and double check that what they are offering applies to you specifically.

Be flexible. End of the season items – like my boat – are always easier to knock down in price.

Ask for extras to lubricate the deal.

Offer to buy what you want in bulk. This always deserves a discount.
