BEST ROYAL SPECIAL THE REPAIR SHOP
As part of the BBC 100 celebrations, which continue across the week, this special episode sees Jay Blades and his expert craftspeople visit Dumfries House in Scotland. It was recorded between autumn 2021 and spring 2022, when the team were invited to Ayrshire by the then Prince of Wales (above, with Blades), before his accession to the throne, to meet some of the students on The Prince’s Foundation’s Building Craft Programme — a training initiative that teaches traditional skills such as blacksmithing, stonemasonry and wood carving.
It’s a wonderfully warm episode as series favourites Kirsten Ramsay, Steve Fletcher and Will Kirk work alongside the apprentices to restore two pieces selected by the future king: an 18th-century bracket clock and a piece of Wemyss Ware made for Queen
Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It’s also a chance to see the new king in a way we rarely get to — unguarded, informal and showing real passion for preserving heritage craft skills and helping young people.
