THREE PINES CANADIAN MURDER MYSTERY

THINKING MAN’S SLEUTH

When a spate of murders affects the seemingly idyllic Canadian hamlet of Three Pines, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called in to investigate. It’s not an easy mystery to crack though, as he discovers layers of secrets lying beneath the placid surface of the small town and his own long-buried ghosts return to haunt him. Alfred Molina is perfectly cast as the thoughtful and intellectual Gamache (above, centre), a man who tries to see the best in everyone even when seemingly confronted by the very worst, in an engrossing and stylish eight-episode drama based on the mystery novels of Louise Penny. If it’s a success,

Molina could be gainfully employed as Gamache for some time to come — this week sees the release of the 18th novel in the series. Episodes 1 and 2 from Friday, then weekly

YOUR CHRISTMAS OR MINE? DELIGHTFUL BRITISH ROMCOM

Every year, we’re deluged with festive romcoms from the US.

That’s not a complaint — the Americans turned it into an art and an industry, over the years – but it’s a change to have a UK one for a change, and a class-clash comedy is about as British as you can get. Sex Education’s Asa Butterfield (above) and Cora Kirk star as the sweet couple who accidentally end up spending Christmas with each other’s families, who turn out to hail from the opposite end of the social scale — he’s actually in line to the throne. A delightful comedy of awkwardness ensues, grounded by a supporting cast that includes Daniel Mays, Angela Griffin and Harriet Walter. From Friday
