DISTURBING AGE-GAP TALE In a different year, Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman could have been up for Best Actress in this unsettling drama about an actor shadowing an age-gap couple. As it is, it’s just up for the screenplay, but their duelling performances are still terrific to watch. Sky/Now
PAST LIVES SOPHISTICATED WEEPIE
A bittersweet story about love, the choices we make and the consequences they have, this Best Picture nominee is a beautiful piece of work. Teo Yoo and Greta Lee (above) star as the childhood sweethearts reunited in New York and thinking about what might have been. Netflix
MAESTRO BERNSTEIN BIOPIC
Netflix’s biggest Oscar hopeful has a lot in common with Oppenheimer but a much lower profile, having only spent a relatively short time in cinemas. Bradley Cooper (right, with Carey Mulligan) directs himself as the maverick composer Leonard Bernstein in a solidly stirring drama with seven nods. Netflix
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON TRUE-LIFE EXPLOITATION
Martin Scorsese’s Western crime drama about white men exploiting the Osage tribe when oil is found on their land picked up ten nods, the third highest total. But it’s the longest Best Picture nominee by a clear margin, at well over three hours. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro star. Apple TV+
NAPOLEON BATTLE-FILLED EPIC
Ridley Scott’s mammoth take on the French leader features some incredible battle scenes, and its three nominations are all for production. Apple TV+
THE ZONE OF INTEREST BANALITY OF EVIL
