A SINN Féin local election candidate tipped to take a Dáil seat in the next General Election is a nephew of the notorious criminal, Cyril ‘Dublin Jimmy’ McGuinness.

The Irish Mail on Sunday has learned that Conor McGuinness, a local election candidate in

Waterford, is the nephew of the now deceased criminal mastermind who arranged the abduction and brutal torture of Quinn Industrial Holdings executive, Kevin Lunney.

This horrific attack happened close to the businessman’s home in September 2019 and after the vicious assault, Mr Lunney was left for dead on the side of the road.

Three men were later convicted of the attack but ‘Dublin Jimmy’ eluded justice because he suflion fered a fatal attack during a police raid on a house where he was staying in England.

However, his criminal exploits have become a talking point among his nephew’s constituents in the coastal town of Dungarvan after a series of comments were posted on social media.

But in addition to highlighting Cyril McGuinness’s unsavoury past, serious and completely unfounded allegations against some other McGuinness family members have been posted by an individual on social media.

A source close to the local election candidate, tipped to be Sinn Féin Health spokesman David Cullinane’s running mate in the next General Election, revealed: ‘Conor never met his father’s brother and he did not know about him until a few years ago. All he knows about him is what he has read in the papers.

‘This person has made serious allegations and the legal advice is there is no point in taking legal action because the person posting these comments is based abroad.’

By the time Cyril McGuinness died in November 2019, the 54year-old had accumulated more than 50 separate convictions and had links with international crime gangs, the Provisional IRA and dissident republican groups.

Known by the moniker ‘Dublin Jimmy’, he was credited with masterminding a massive racket in stolen construction and farm machinery.

And it was this ambitious scheme that ultimately brought him to the attention of police in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Lithuania, Spain and Serbia. A covert investigation called Operation Segund was set up and this led to the seizure of €7 milworth of stolen plant and machinery.

Meanwhile, McGuinness was also convicted of 44 charges in relation to the illegal dumping of 28,000 tonnes of waste from the Republic in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

He was given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to 22 charges of illegally transporting waste.

The notorious criminal was also the head of a crime gang responsible for at least 11 ATM robberies around the border counties in the late 2000s. The gang was also responsible for a spate of similar raids in Munster

Nephew Conor McGuinness was first elected to Waterford Council in 2019 and during his tenure there has served as Sinn Féin’s leader on the local authority.

He had no comment to make when contacted this weekend by the MoS.
