PHOTOGRAPHY ABSENCE OF SUBJECT

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - LISTINGS -

When the Mona Lisa was stolen early in the 20th century, more people turned up to look at the empty space than had come to see the painting. People are fascinated by absence, and New York photographer Michael Somoroff takes that fascination as his starting point in Absence of Subject. He takes August Sander’s celebrated portrait photographs (right) and digitally removes the subject, showing the originals side-by -side with the – oddly haunted – empty settings.
