VIVA VHS! Triskel, Christchurch, Cork Sat 8.15 pm triskelartscen

It’s a depressing thought, but there are legions of adult-like people - and a few actual adults - who don’t remember the VHS as a force in home entertainment. Don’t worry, folks. Chris O’Neill, head cinema honcho at Triskel Christchurch, has had a root through his own collection and put together a celebration of the medium.

Presented by Twisted Celluloid, Triskel’s cult strand, the programme features two collections of cheesy trailers from the high era of taped entertainment. The filling in the sandwich is the ’88 cult feature Remote Control, in which Kevin Dillon plays a video store clerk enmeshed in an alien plot to control our minds. Perfect!

“I’ve been collecting movies for almost 25 years”, O’Neill tells us. “When I was a teenager I rummaged through old video shops and bargain bins searching for movies I hadn’t seen or sometime even heard of. Before the internet, it was the only way to learn about cinema.”
