THE MILLION DOLLAR WALL

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - THE MEMING OF LIFE -

Working with the OPW, Carl Krebs of Davis Brody Bond led the architectural team on the new Irish Arts Center. The City of New York gave the land for one dollar, backed up by a $36.75million funding agreement. The Irish Government has also contributed $8.3million during the project’s evolution. One of the conditions of the land donation was that the façade of the original garage on the site was retained. “It’s the million dollar wall,” says Krebs with a rueful smile at the cost of building around the existing structure. Krebs, who also designed the Memorial Museum at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, is hugely sensitive to the nuances of a site. “The one thing that was stronger than I had anticipated,” he says, “was the notion of hospitality and warmth, I don’t want to sound glib, but it’s so present in what the Irish Arts Center is and does.”
