A time- poor and highly rewarding alternative to the book club is the poetry pool.
Last year, thanks to the artist Katherine Boucher Beug ( whose work is pictured), whose bright idea it was, a group of us emailed each other a poem every Sunday. That’s it. You don’t need to swallow a fat novel in time, discuss and debate, or even like one another’s choices.
And by next December, you’ll have a year in poetry to look back on. Stuck for inspiration? Try Poem for the Day ( ed Nicholas Albery, ¤ 18 approx), The Penguin Book of Irish Poetry ( ed Patrick Crotty, ¤ 15.75), or dive into the poetry pages on irishtimes. com
