Downey and English fare best of Ir­ish at UCI World Cup

Mark Downey and Felix English fared best of the dozen Ir­ish rid­ers in ac­tion at the third round of the UCI track World Cup in Berlin this week­end, with the duo net­ting a fine ninth in the Madi­son race.

“That was a taste of what it’s go­ing to be like for the next few years in Madi­son,” said Downey after­wards, re­fer­ring to an in­crease in the pre­vi­ous stan­dard of the event. “We’re us­ing com­pletely dif­fer­ent gears, be­cause the race is now three to four kilo­me­tres per hour faster.”

Ly­dia Gur­ley and Shan­non McCur­ley rode solidly in the women’s Madi­son, net­ting 13th. The quar­tet of Mia Grif­fin, Kelly Mur­phy, Alice Sharpe and Orla Walsh fin­ished 12th in the women’s team pur­suit, with their time of four min­utes 33.296 sec­onds im­prov­ing the Ir­ish na­tional record by 1.6 sec­onds. Ly­dia Boylan was 14th in the Om­nium, while JB Mur­phy 17th in the men’s event.
