Downey and English fare best of Irish at UCI World Cup
Mark Downey and Felix English fared best of the dozen Irish riders in action at the third round of the UCI track World Cup in Berlin this weekend, with the duo netting a fine ninth in the Madison race.
“That was a taste of what it’s going to be like for the next few years in Madison,” said Downey afterwards, referring to an increase in the previous standard of the event. “We’re using completely different gears, because the race is now three to four kilometres per hour faster.”
Lydia Gurley and Shannon McCurley rode solidly in the women’s Madison, netting 13th. The quartet of Mia Griffin, Kelly Murphy, Alice Sharpe and Orla Walsh finished 12th in the women’s team pursuit, with their time of four minutes 33.296 seconds improving the Irish national record by 1.6 seconds. Lydia Boylan was 14th in the Omnium, while JB Murphy 17th in the men’s event.
