Referee Reginald Lathbridge was banned for life by the Ghanaian FA after he mistakenly named the wrong player in his match report as having been booked, the upshot being that the fella who actually received the yellow card went on to play in a crucial game when he should have been suspended.

That led to another subsequently relegated club seeking an injunction to delay the start of the new season. The FA’s chief annoyance was that it had taken Lathbridge seven months to admit the error. In his defence the ref declared: “If it is possible for a doctor to operate on a patient and leave a scissors in his tummy and later realise what he has done, why can’t I also do the same even if it’s seven months later?” There just was no answer to that.
