Madden snatches win
Mullinalaghta boss Mickey Graham guided his native Cavan to victory in a fiesty Dr McKenna Cup opener at Kingspan Breffni.
A draw looked on the cards before Conor Madden produced a great long-range point in added-on time to seal the deal for the hosts.
Pat Havern played a key role in Down’s display and his 9th minute point helped ease his side into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead.
A gem of a point from Cavan debutant Stephen Smith and another fine effort from Havern made it 0-6 to 0-4 for the visitors but points from Pierce Smith and Raymond Galligan drew Cavan level (0-6 to 0-6) at the interval.
Intriguingly, Down failed to score for the opening 21 minutes of the second half as points from Galligan (45), Simon Cadden and Stephen Smith helped Cavan into a 0-11 to 0-6 lead after 54 minutes.
Down responded with a goal from a penalty by Havern and a point from Conor O’Grady had them level before Madden’s fine winning score.
