Farranfore’s Mccarty in it for the long haul

Indoor double at 1,500m and 3,000m for Kerry athlete

ON Sunday last the Munster Senior, Junior and Masters Indoor Championsh­ips were held in Nenagh where Kerry athletes had a good representa­tion across all categories.

In the Senior Indoors Marie Mccarthy of Farranfore had a great double when winning both the 1,500 and 3,000m, while Ailbhe Courtney of St Brendan’s won the 400m. Daniel Clifford of Farranfore was a gold medallist in the shot, as was David Hogan in the pole vault while another Farranfore athlete, Niall Prendivill­e, won the walk. The St Brendan’s 4x200m relay team of Dylan Roche, Luke O’keefe, David Hogan and Eoghan Courtney were silver medallists.

Kerry had some fine performanc­es in the Junior competitio­n. The St Brendan’s pair of Peter O’brien and Úna Marley were both gold medallists. Peter won the 35lbs weight for distance while Úna won the pole vault. Emma Prendivill­e was first in the walk while Sinéad O’connor of Tralee Harriers won her speciality triple jump and was second in the long jump.

Her club mate Eoin O’carroll ran a new personal best of 7.21 when placing second in the 60m. Eoin occupied the same position in the long jump. Another Tralee Harriers pair were also junior medallists. Laura Lynch was second in the triple jump and Kate Boyd third in the shot. Katie O’riordan of St Brendan’s was second in the pole vault. David Kavanagh of Tralee Harriers had a fine run to take third positions in the 1,500m.

Our Masters as usual did very well. Stand out gold medal performanc­es came from Patsy O’connor of Tralee Harriers, Robert Purcell, Mike Browne, Bríd Stack, Síle O’donoghue, Annette O’brien, all of Gneeveguil­la, Jer Mccarthy of Kenmare, Arthur Novac of St Brendan’s and Eddie Mulcahy of Farranfore.

George Mccarthy of Farranfore and Donal Crowley of Tralee Harriers were also in the medals.

Others to compete well on the day in the various categories, but finish just outside the medals included Arthur Fitzgerald, Colm Lynch, Jack O’sullivan, Michael Godley, Dylan Roche and Luke O’keeffe.
