Annual Christmas fund-raiser for CUH a roaring success

- BY KEVIN HUGHES

OVER 300 people from all over Kerry descended on Cahersiveen’s Ring of Kerry Hotel recently for the annual Women’s Christmas dinner dance in aid of Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Brainchild of Foilmore farmer John Garvey, the event is in its ninth year with a whopping €80,000 raised in that time.

Gerard O’donoghue of Valentia Sound provided the music on the night as young and old danced into the small hours.

While final figures for this year’s event have yet to be tallied, organisers hope to raise close to €10,000 for cancer care as well as the neurology and Cystic Fibrosis units at CUH.

John’s daughter, Claire O’shea, thanked all involved on the night and she has paid special praise to her father for the mammoth effort he puts in on an annual basis.

“A conversation rarely passes without an opportunity for him to sell tickets for the dance – it’s a year round effort and he travels the length and breadth of the county to promote it, that’s why it’s been so successful,” Claire stated.

“We’re extremely grateful to all who helped on the night, to everyone who sold tickets and donated spot prizes for the raffle. Also, to Mary O’mahony who supervised and the hotel’s management for providing the function room free of charge each year.”

A presentation will be made later in the year, possibly in June or July, and anyone who still wishes to make a donation should contact John.

Alternatively, they can donate directly to the CUH Benefit Dance Account at Bank of Ireland, Cahersiveen.
