- by Donal O’Doherty

IN the first competition of the year on the Community Games calendar Moyvane / Knockanure claimed the gold medals in the badminton competition, with Currow claiming second place in a nailbiting finish with Anascaul / Camp / Inch.

Moyvane / Knockanure had a clean sweep in this competition last year and the status quo remained again in Moyvane last Saturday.

This Sunday, January 22 we have the boys Under-15 indoor soccer, this will be held in both Listowel and Mountcoal with a 9.30am sign in for the morning session and 1pm signin for the afternoon session. There are 14 teams entered and teams will be informed whether it is Listowel or Mountcoal where they are to attend. Dingle went all the way to the National Final last year, so can anyone repeat that success?

This Thursday, January 19 is the closing date for the boys Under-13 indoor soccer, where once again the venue will be Listowel and Mountcoal. The closing dates for the solo and group music and the girls table tennis is also this Thursday and the venues are Abbeydorney and Mounthawk, Tralee respectively, with a sign in time of 6pm for the solo music and 7pm for the group music. The sign in time for the table tennis is 10.30am.

Although 2012 will most certainly have its ups and downs, it remains to be seen whether the children of Kerry will surpass their remarkable achievements of the past few years. This year we have our largest amount of areas in a number of years with a total of 46 areas now enrolled, which bodes well for our future.

One of the many problems that has been circling is the increased expenditure upon families with the increased cost of travelling and services, but rest assured all possible avenues will be explored to reduce the burden in these uncertain economic times.

The first county executive meeting was held last week along with all area secretaries, all fixtures and venues along with co-ordinators have now been finalised from January until April. All area secretaries now have the appropriate forms and information for the upcoming events.

Please note that any forms that are not received on time this year will be refused entry into competitions, all forms must be received by the registrar ten days prior to the date of the event. This is in order to guarantee proper facilities and personnel to ensure the smooth running of events.

If any area personnel encounter any problems please contact their area secretary and if necessary any member of the county executive where we will endeavour to help.

Remember, it is not too late to get involved in Community Games, so if you would like to help out in any way please contact your local area committee where you will be welcomed with open arms.
