Start day in style at Men’s Breakfast Club

OPEN ON FRIDAY MORNINGS IN BALLYDUFF

- DONAL NOLAN

THERE’S NO excuse for meeting the day on an empty stomach for the men of Ballyduff anymore after the official launch of the new Men’s Breakfast Club at Buds Family Resource Centre.

Thanks to wholesaler Eamon Leen, the kitchens came alive to the exquisite smell of sizzling rashers and sausages as Noreen O’Callaghan and Darren Healy cooked up a mouth-watering feast that left the 20 or so male fast breakers more than satisfied.

“We were delighted with the turnout and they all thoroughly enjoyed the hearty breakfast Noreen and Darren prepared,” Buds spokesperson Katie Lucid McCabe said.

Eamon Leen sponsored the fare, made available for the extremely reasonable charge of just €3. “All the proceeds of the morning will now go towards the completion of the Men’s Shed down by the presbytery which we hope will prove of huge benefit to the men of the community long into the future.”

Like the Men’s Shed, the Breakfast Club has grown out of the Ballyduff Community of Excellence in Mental Health programme, which was piloted by Buds and involves the whole community in a range of entertaining and informative activites.

The success of the programme in the local community was recently recognised in a major national award for the Ballyduff family centre.

Traditionally, it is the men of Ireland who are the most difficult to involve in new community activities. But the smell of succulent sausages wafting down the village soon had them rolling in in Ballyduff in what is hoped will ultimately lead to a major new asset in the guise of the Men’s Shed.

The Breakfast Club, run by Buds co-ordinator Anthony O’Carroll, will take place every Friday morning.
