Student Daniel is off to Vermont
SIXTH YEAR WON EIL TRAVEL AWARD
A LISTOWEL student is off for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as one of just a handful of people from around the world to take part in a summer camp at the Governor’s Institute in Vermont.
St Michael’s 6th-year student Daniel Mulvihill will debate key issues there with counterparts from around the world - meeting ‘ key’ politicians and facing the challenge of coming-up with solutions to local and global problems that directly impact people.
The bright young Listowel man secured the dream experience when he won an EIL Travel Award to Vermont - given by the Corkbased EIL Intercultural Learning, which organises cultural and educational travel programmes around the world.
Daniel received the award in recognition of his work with the Student Council and Comhairle na nOg at the school and is one of just five Irish students to make the trip this summer.
“I am absolutely over the moon!” Daniel said. “The Governor’s Institute in Vermont seems so exciting and I think I am going to learn so much from my time there. It will be great to meet so many other young people from different backgrounds too!”
The activities in Vermont will include discussions with politicians, activists and community leaders, team-building challenges, leadership skills workshops, field trips, sports, campfires, creative simulations such as a mock congress and town council, and arts and cultural activities.
“It's great to see the change in people from when they go away to when they come back. Meeting them again, hearing their stories, feeling their excitement, and listening to how they're going to apply what they've learned in their future endeavours is very satisfying for everyone at EIL,” Director of EIL Intercultural Learning Kevin Hickey said.
