Double gold for Claire Fitzgerald at Celtic University Internatio­nal games in Glasgow

CLAIRE Fitzgerald, Tralee Harriers, was in fine form competing at the Celtic University Internatio­nal in Glasgow on Saturday, taking gold in both the discus and the shot.

Meanwhile at the European Youth Olympic Trials in Baku, Azerbaijan Adam King threw a massive distance of 70.59m in the hammer to qualify for the final where he finished in 11th place overall. The trials bring together the best young athletes (16-17 years old) from around Europe to compete in track and field events. The Irish atheltes selected to represent the European team at the World Youth Olympics in Nanjing China in August have yet to be announced, but Adam must certainly be in contention.

Meanwhile, there were medals for some of Kerry's finest secondary school athletes at the Aviva All-Ireland Schools on Saturday . Rachel Bowler ( Mercy Mounthawk) won bronze in the Junior Girls Long Jump and there was bronze also for Aoife Maony (Presentati­on SS Listowel) in the Intermedia­te Girls 800m. Aoife Doyle (Intermedia­te School Killorglin) won silver in the Intermedia­te Girls discus and bronze in the hammer.

There were three medals for St Brigid's Killarney when Kayleigh Cronin won gold in the Senior Girls discus and silver in the shot and Rita Casey won bronze in the Senior Girls Javelin.

Eoin O'Carroll, Mercy Mounthawk, won gold in the Senior Boys triple jump and silver in the long jump.

The Masters County Championsh­ips were held on Sunday, May 25 in Castleisla­nd with some athletes competing in this event for the very first time.

In the O-35 mens category Kevin Lynch ( Lios Tuathail) was outstandin­g, taking gold on the track in the 200m, 400m and 3,000m. Tomas Griffin (An Riocht) won the O-40 100m in a blistering time of 11.88 scconds and then went on to take gold in the long jump. Aidan McCarhty (Farranfore Maine Valley) also put in some fine performanc­es in men O-35, winning the 100m, long jump and shot.

In the women's events Elaine Cronin (Gneeveguil­la) took gold in O-35 100m, 200m, long jump and shot. Maria McCarthy (Farranfore Maine Valley) won the womens 3,000m.

In the O-40 category Annette O'Brien (Gneeveguil­la) took gold in the 100m, 200m and long jump. These and all the results from both days of the County Championsh­ips, juvenile and masters, can be seen in full at www.kerryathle­tics.com
