The Kerryman (North Kerry)

KNOCKNAGOSHEL

-

The winter woollies were discarded wholesale within the parish last week, as there was a wonderful improvement in the weather. This meant all hands on deck as harvest operations really swung into action, as stated before crops are bountiful and of top quality and the day of cutting the standing rib, buttercup and daisy are now but a memory. Daily more and more fields are been whitened as balers and harvesters work round the clock virtually. All going well the 2014 harvest could be completed by Munster football final day.

ST KIERANS

The Fr Bob Walshe Park in Castleisland never before looked in better shape than on Sunday last, where Mid- Kerry edged out the local district side St Kieran's in the first round of the county senior football championship. On the St Kieran's team from Knocknagoshel were James Walsh at midfield and Edmund Walsh at full forward, and on the subs bench were Michael Walsh ,Michael Brosnan and Shane O'Connell. The Saints now go into the losers round.

VISITORS TO THE MALL

In brilliant sunshine on Saturday evening last two coach loads of visitors rolled into Knocknagoshel village. The visitors were a group from Listowel Writers week and this group included people from many counties in Ireland plus some from overseas. The group visited the Bible Garden and St Mary's Church before some local history was delivered in a talk. Two local songs were aired one relating to a burial many years ago . Afterwards the group retired to Walsh's before heading off to Listowel.

Earlier the group had visited Duagh and Lyreacrompane. Some of the group from Tipperary were delighted to hear of the time of the exploits here after the rescue of Sean Hogan at the station of Knocklong in 1918. Here with Hogan at that time were Dan Breen, Sean Treacy and Seamus Robinson. At the time Sean Treacy had some wounds which were dressed by the late Jim Thompson a noted local bonesetter and man of cures.

During their time in the parish the Big Four as they were known stayed at Jack Hickey's Ballinattin and at Eily O'Connor's Raheenaugh.

They went very close to been captured as a spy had trailed them to Knocknagoshel. The spy was apprehended and dealt with.
