McIntyre: emigration, work commitments and injuries left Kenmare District with just thirteen players available

- JASON O’CONNOR

KENMARE District Board Chairman PJ McIntyre has expressed his confidence that the district will be able to field a team against Dr Crokes this Sunday in the Losers Round of the County Senior Football Championship following their inability to fulfil last Saturday's scheduled first round encounter away to Dingle.

The West Kerry club were awarded the fixture by Monday night's CCC meeting and go straight into the Third Round of the competition. Kenmare District were then placed in the Losers Round draw which saw them drawn out against the defending champions.

The Kenmare District Board chairman said there were a variety of reasons why the team were unable to field last week.

“We have some players gone to America for the summer, others were tied up with work commitments with it being a Bank Holiday weekend and between injuries and exams we only had thirteen players available to play against Dingle.

“We tried hard to get others to make up a team but they could not make themselves available for the match at short notice between work and other commitments,” McIntyre told The Kerryman.

In terms of this coming weekend's fixture he said there should be a team available to partake against Crokes away from home.

“As it stands we're okay in terms of having a team to play on Sunday. We do have a number of injuries still but we will endeavour to field a team regardless of how strong or not it is against Dr Crokes,” the McIntyre said.

In terms of the sanction proposed by the Competitions Control Committee (CCC) for their inability to play last Saturday's match, McIntyre said that it will be discussed by the Board in due course.

“It's not a pressing concern with the competition still ongoing for us. Our next meeting is scheduled for July and we will discuss it then.”
