RECENT DEATH

Sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and many friends of the late Mary Danaher (nee Regan), The Cross, Mountcollins who passed away at St Ita’s Hospital, NCW during the past week after a short illness. In her 90th year, she was a native of Skibbereen, Co Cork.

Over 60 years ago, Mary and her husband Pats, who was a native of the parish, returned with their young family to live in Mountcollins. This was a time that was far removed from the luxuries we enjoy today. Mary was never a woman to complain and worked hard through tough times to care for and raise a fine family.

The Danaher homestead was a welcoming place where nightly callers came to discusss the events of the day and put things right in the world. Regulars would include Jack Cahill, Moss Lyons, Davy Doody, Con Lyons, Tommy Barry and Batt Finnegan. All were fed and watered as Mary played host to her male audience.

Mary was blessed with a beautiful voice and was a talented singer. Over many years she was a member of the local Church choir. Along with her best friend and neighbour, Eileen Brosnan (RIP) they were in constant demand at weddings and social gatherings as entertainers and also entertained at the Day Care Centre in Abbeyfeale in recent times.

Mary bwas the last of the elderly residents at the Cross and leaves a voic in the community where she was highly regarded. We will miss her caring attitude, the great conversation and of course the cupan tae.

The regard with which Mary was held in the parish and beyond was evident by the large crowds who attended her removal on Wednesday night and her Requiem Mass and burial in Mountcollins on Thursday last. She is survived by sons John, Brendan and Jimmy, daughters Eileen and Una and their families, many relations and friends. May she rest in peace.
