ST. JOSEPH’S N.S.

St. Joseph’s N.S. Bouleenshere would like to thank everyone who supported our annual Quiz night in Flahive’s Bar last Friday night. The Parent’s Council organised another hugely successful evening which everyone enjoyed. Despite the inclement weather we had a full house for our fundraising quiz.

M. C. on the night, Kevin Fay, ensured all went smoothly and we want to thank him for making sure that everyone enjoyed the event. Thanks to Breda Cronin who set the questions and had a tie breaker round at the ready to separate the teams at the end. We would like to thank most sincerely all the people who gave spot prizes for our raffle. There were over 20 spot prizes given out on the night which ensured that most tables went home with something.

Congratulations to the winning team of Marie O’Mahony, Trish O’Brien, Richard O’Mahony and Mikey O’Halloran who claimed the €100 Table Prize most kindly donated by Patrick Flahive.

Events like this ensure that The Parents’ Council can subsidise outings and swimming classes for every child in our school. Míle Buiochas.

O’CALLAGHAN MEMORIAL

The 2017 Bernard O’ Callaghan Memorial Senior Football Championship sponsored by McMunns Ballybunion is truly underway with four first round games decided in the past two weeks. Our own Senior Team unfortunately made their exit from the competition on Saturday afternoon last, when defending champions and neighbouring Club Ballydonoghue put an end to our aspirations for yet another year. But our Team despite being young accounted for themselves quiet well and were in the game right up to the last quarter, they will learn greatly from this and hopefully will go on to bigger and better things in the future. However looking back (and not being critical) over the Championship records, the Millennium year 2000 was the last time in which the club lifted the Eamon O’Donoghue Cup after defeating St Senans in Tarbert. Since then the Club has gone through its leanest period by not winning the competition since. The history books show that it took the Club 14 years to win their first title (1940). Fr Pat Creed R.I.P. was the Captain in 1953, when the Club won their 5th title, then there was a lull of another 14 years before the late Eamon O’Donoghue R.I.P. (in whose honour the cup is now named) brought the Cup back in 1968. That was the start of the glory years and the fabulous clashes of Bally/Tarbert who dominated during the early 70’s further titles in 1986 and 1993 placed Ballylongford on the top of the leader board with 14 titles on the history Roll of Honour considering that they also lost another 8 Finals during the late 50’s and 60’s. However, we look forward with great hope to 2018 when we may once again be back up there with the best. Well done to all concerned.
