FROM CAHERSIVEEN TO THE NEW YORK STUDIOS OF CNN
IT’S a long way from Cahersiveen and the world of South and Mid-Kerry rowing, to the studios of CNN World News in New York.
One young man who is making a big impact at CNN is Donie O’Sullivan, son of Noreen and Donal ‘Tommy’ O’Sullivan of Cahersiveen. Donal ‘Tommy’ is well known to patrons of Quinlan’s Kerry Fish Shop in Cahersiveen and would also be very familiar to followers of South and Mid-Kerry rowing. His days as Cox of the Liberator Seine boat and as a stroke-oarsman in that same boat for many years with Patrick Golden of Cuascrome, Over-The-Water, are well documented.
Donie, who worked at Kerry Fish with his father Donal, was recruited by CNN and works as a New York based producer for the CNN Social Discovery team.
He currently works on the news desk covering domestic and international stories and regularly reports from the field .
He is a past pupil of Coláiste Na Sceilge and subsequently attended UCD where he studied History, International Relations and Political Science. On completion of his studies there he went on to Queens University in Belfast and achieved a Masters degree in Political science and Government, achieving first class honours. Previous to third level studies he also acquitted himself quite well at a Young Scientist of the year exhibition.
Having worked in online marketing at Love Ireland.ie and having also been an Assembly Clerk at Parliament Buildings, Belfast, he took a position as Journalist and Duty Editor in Politics with Storyful, a digital media and global journalism project, launched in 2010 by Mark Little, former Prime Time journalist
He then went to New York with Storyful, who set up office there. Rupert Murdock subsequently bought Storyful which led to Donie being recruited by CNN World News, where he has since been employed.
In the recent past the CNN man from Cahersiveen very graciously provided his nearby Renard friends Mike and Bridie O’Neill as well as Gene and Áine Young with a tour of the CNN Studios where they met with staff members and were very well received.
