A KENMARE salmon company, which has since gone into liquidation, mislabelled the origin of its smoked salmon, Kenmare District Court heard last week.

The company, Kenmare Salmon Ltd, which was represented by the liquidator, Marcus Treacy and with an address of OCKT Ltd, Glebe Houe, Glebe Place, Killarney came before the court on a charge of supplying food information which was misleading contrary to EU regulations.

The court heard that the incident took place prior to the liquidator’s appointment.

On July 23, 2016 an on-the-spot check by an officer from the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority took place.

Packaged smoked salmon with the origin Ireland/Faro on it was found to be sourced from Scotland and was thus mislabelled.

Employees at the factory were questioned the next day on the matter, the court heard.

Judge David Waters asked if the incident was believed to be a once-off and the court heard that the mislabelling was not believed to be a once-off. The company involved in this incident was convicted and fined €500. This company is in liquidation.

The brand name Kenmare Salmon has since been taken over by a new separate company.
