MAKING HIS MARK Comhghairdeas to Martin Stack, Killorglin and Kilpadogue, Tarbert recently appointed Trainer and Selector with Mid-Kerry U-16 Football team. The team won the U-16 County Championship by defeating a fancied East Kerry side.

WINDOW ON THE PAST

Recently in listing the names of Tarbert players who who won All Ireland medals with Kerry I omitted the following peiladoirí, mea culpa. Helena McElligott, Puleen, won an All Ireland medal in 1990 when Kerry defeated Laois in the Peil na mBan Final. Helena who would have strong football DNA was the first Tarbert member of the fair sex to win an All Ireland medal. Johnny Wren, Tarmons won a medal, his name and year 1904 engraved, when Kerry 0- 5 defeated Dublin 0-2 in the All Ireland final. He was also on the Kerry team defeated by Kildare in the 1905 Final. Johnny was known as ‘timber toes’ because reputedly he played his best football in his stockinged feet. Johnny Wren who brought this information to my attention is a grand nephew of ‘timber toes’ and himself played Minor, u-21 and Senior Football with Kerry but like others was not fortunate to win an All Ireland medal. He is brother of the indefatigable Mike and both sons of the late Sean Wren who played football for Tarbert and North Kerry. Briseann an dúchais amach í gcónaí.
