Taking action on climate change now
WE can avert environmental catastrophe, but we need to take action now.
This is the message from a new grouping of community organisations and agencies as they embark on a series of public talks aimed at waking the general population up to the most pressing issue of the age.
First to address the Tralee Climate Action Talks and Workshops is an IT Tralee manager whose award-winning innovations in energy efficiency at the college already sees the Institute saving roughly €170k on fuel costs annually. Estates Manager for the IT Tralee Donal Hunt leads the series with a free talk at the Imperial Hotel, Tralee, on Tuesday, October 23, from 6pm to 7pm on the methods he and his team at the IT employed to control energy usage, reduce costs and reduce the impact on the environment.
Thursday, November 22, is the next big date for the Climate Action initiative with three events: Fenit Wild Mind Festival founder Mike O’Neill will speak in the Imperial Hotel at 11am about how he moved to a plastic-free business at the Beach Café he owns in Fenit.
At 1pm, Angela Nagle will relate the story of her own family’s success in living entirely plastic free for a month, in a free event sponsored by Kerry County Council at Siamsa Tíre, discussing her top tips for shopping and living plastic free.
Meanwhile, a leading environmental scientist and climate activist will deliver a hard-hitting overview of the campaign now required to avert catastrophe. Dr Tara Shine will set out the case for climate action at Siamsa Tíre at 7pm on November 22. “Either we get paralysed by this reality or we get motivated by it,” Dr Shine stated, in a clarion call to the general public to get active now on safeguarding our children’s future.
The series is being run by GLAN Tralee in association with Siamsa Tíre, Transition Kerry, Kerry County Council, Tralee Chamber Alliance and the IT Tralee.
