ITT refute claims about standards

STUDENTS UNION BACK COLLEGE MANAGEMENT AS ACADEMIC COUNCIL MEMBERS QUIT

- By SIMON BROUDER

MANAGEMENT at IT Tralee have rejected claims from 14 members of the college’s Academic Council who resigned from the council citing concerns over academic standards at the institute.

The 34-member council oversees academic standards and examination procedures.

Earlier this month 14 of its members handed a letter to management resigning from the board and citing concerns about inadequate rules for examination boards, and the examination boards’ lack of accountability to the academic council.

The 14 council members also claim that for three years they have been seeking to address the ‘dysfunctionality’ of the council.

ITT management said they regret that the council members had chosen to resign

“We reject the claim by former members of the Academic Council that academic standards are not being applied correctly. We also note that while 14 members of the Council have taken the decision to resign, the majority remain to ensure that the statutory role of the Council can continue to operate in line with Institute polices and procedures,” said the statement.

“IT Tralee places the student body at the core of all of our endeavours and we can confirm that quality assurance procedures in place at the Institute mirror the robust benchmarks set out by the national Quality Qualifications Ireland (QQI) guidelines,” said IT Management on Wednesday.

ITT’s Student Union have expressed confidence in the systems in place at the college.

“We are disappointed to see that 14 members of the Institutes academic staff decided to resign their seats on the Academic Council. However, the IT Tralee Students’ Union has complete confidence in the Institute’s Academic Council and the work it does in safeguarding academic standards at the college,” said the SU.

“We are satisfied that current Institute policy is in line with national Quality and Qualifications Ireland standards,” the statement added.
