ABBEYDORNEY’S BATTLE ROYALE A SELL-OUT

PARISH HEADS FOR A SECOND ENCOUNTER AT THE BALLYROE

- By KATHLEEN O’SULLIVAN

ABBEYDORNEY is united when it comes to most things. but, on Sunday night, a glaring exception occurred when 64 well-known people in the parish did battle against one another to raise funds for their hurling club.

In 2016, Abbeydorney Hurling Club hosted what was one of the biggest events ever held by the club with their Battle of the Parish competition and this year, the scale of success of the same event was not shadowed by that of two years ago.

Over the past few weeks, the local recruits for the event worked closely with choreographer and drama coach Cassie Leen and their hard labour came to fruition as they brought Hollywood to Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Sunday evening by performing popular movie scenes.

Members of the club said they were delighted to hold the event and the success is down to the high level of community involvement. A percentage of the proceeds is also going towards an organisation that was chosen as one of the charity partners of the GAA for 2018 - the Kerry Hospice.

The night was also one to celebrate members at all levels in the club as they relished recent sporting success. “In 2018, while the coveted Neilus Flynn trophy still eludes us, the pinnacle of our underage success was capturing the Sean Lovett Cup after a nine year gap,” PRO Mary Roche said.

“This triumph at minor level bore the fruits of the hard work, dedication and commitment of the players and management to the underage structures in place within the club over the last number of years.”
