There was no fairytale ending to Sean Weir’s internatio­nal debut as Ireland suffered a 1-9 to 1-11 defeat against Scotland in the Senior Hurling-Shinty Internatio­nal series at Bught Park, Inverness on Saturday 20th October. Ireland, managed by Conor Phelan (Kilkenny) and William Maher (Tipperary), looked well placed at half-time to end their losing streak in the series, but Scotland rallied in the second half and it was their captain, Grant Irvine, who lifted the Marine Harvest Quaich. Sean, who plays his club hurling with Crotta, said it was an ‘unbelievab­le honour’ for him to be selected for the Irish squad which featured household names like Noel Connors (Waterford) and Jason Forde (Tipperary). . Senans entertaine­d Listowel Emmets in splendid conditions in Jackie Finnerty Park Mountcoal in North Kerry Senior Football Championsh­ip round 1. Sean Weir who had travelled from Scotland after the shinty match led to a goal mouth scramble and David Foran punished scored his second goal. Heading into the closing stages it was nip and tuck and at the final whistle the sides were level 2-10 to 1-13. Extra time followed and in the first period of extra time Sean O’Connell proved accurate again with three points to Listowel’s two. In the final ten minutes Sean Weir slotted two points to the delight of the home fans and Senans move on to the next round with a three point victory 2-15 to 1-15. Well done to the St. Senans players, especially Sean Weir, who played for Ireland on Saturday and helped his Club to the quarter final of the North Kerry Championsh­ip on Sunday. DR O’DONOGHUE CUP ROUND 1 Spa -v- Scartaglen Having not had a competitiv­e match since 19th August Scartaglen always faced an uphill task against Intermedia­te Club side and County Division 1 League side Spa in Killarney today. There cause was not helped with the away side missing up to 8 players. From the throw in Spa raced into an early 1-03 to 0-00 lead. Michael O’Donoghue was chief tormenter and was to be throughout the afternoon. Shay Walsh registered Scartaglen’s first score of the afternoon in the 11th minute from a free and added a further one in the 17th minute. Dara Moynihan had a chance to extend Spa’s lead in the 20th minute from the penalty spot but Scartaglen keeper Martin Hewitt dived to his left to save. Shane Cronin was Spa’s next player to open his account with a point from play before that man again Michael O’Donoghue added two in quick succession from play.
