Killorglin 4 Killarney Celtic B 3

KILLORGLIN had to work hard to see off a committed Killarney Celtic B side who pushed them all the way to the final whistle in a highly entertaining game that had many twists and turns.

Celtic raced into the lead in this game early on with a Stephen McCarthy goal.

Killorglin were back on level terms in the 20th minute when Paul McKenna headed home from a Mike Carey corner kick.

Killarney Celtic had opportunities to take the lead again but they were denied by some fine saves by stand in Killorglin keeper Chris O’Connor and it was 1-1 at half time.

Killorglin went ahead six minutes into the second half after a great up-field move involving a number of players Paddy Collins finished to the net.

Shortly afterwards Celtic restored parity when a free kick was pushed away by the Killorglin goalkeeper and Ryan Kelliher was following up and he found the net from close range.

Killorglin were dealt an injury blow in the 70th minute when Pa Knightly had to be carried off with what turned out to be a fractured shin.

More bad luck fell Killorglin’s way five minutes later when Celtic went ahead with an excellent strike by Stephen McCarthy after splitting the Killorglin defence with a great run.

It would of been easy for the heads to drop now but Killorglin made a few changes, bringing in Dan Whittleton, Tim O’Shea and Eoin Clifford.

Five minutes later Lee Carey was brought down in the Celtic area and it was Whittleton that was given the task of taking the penalty. He made no mistake so the game was level for the third time and it was on a knife edge going into the concluding stages.

With time nearly up and a draw appearing to be the only outcome it was that man again Lee Carey, who never stopped running during the whole game, who nipped in when a Celtic defender headed back to his goalkeeper and gave Killorglin the three points with a lovely finish.

Young Ronan O’Shea came on late to make his senior debut for Killorglin.
